Work with me · Conversion audits

Your site gets the traffic.
People still don’t buy.

I find out why, and show you what to fix first. Nine years in product design, including JD Sports and Paddy Power Betfair. At Paddy Power, one cross-sell I designed added £1.5m in 14 days.

Drag to compare the old and new navigation

  1. Found it in the data. Nothing past the tenth link in each column was getting clicked. People were overwhelmed, not short of options.
  2. Cut it back. Six columns, twelve links at most, ordered by what people actually used.
  3. Proved it. A 28-day A/B test against the old version: click-through from 18% to 32%, and £300k+ in extra revenue.

Paddy Power · Cross-sell

The same offer, shown at a better moment

The first version showed a related bet while people were still choosing their answer, so two decisions fought each other. I moved it to the moment the result landed, when interest peaks and nothing else is competing for attention. A 14-day A/B test against the existing game: £1.5m extra revenue, with engagement and retention unchanged.

What you get

No 60-page report. A list you can act on.

Every fix comes with what’s wrong, the evidence, what to change and how much effort it takes. Ranked, so your team knows exactly where to start on Monday.

You also get a recorded video walking through the lot, so anyone who missed the call can catch up in 15 minutes.

Delivery cost only appears at the last step

What’s wrong
Shoppers find out what delivery costs after entering their card details. It’s the most common reason people abandon a basket.
Evidence
Your analytics show the biggest drop between the delivery and payment steps.
The fix
Show delivery cost, or the free-delivery threshold, on the product page and in the basket.

Measurable drop in engagement or retention

The question

Beat the Drop was a Paddy Power prediction game I’d designed. People answered a run of questions about a live event. The business wanted to know if that moment of interest could carry a related bet, without spoiling the game.

The pushback

The team in Porto were sceptical. The game worked because it felt low stakes, and a betting prompt could damage retention instead of adding revenue. Rather than argue it out, I suggested we treat it as a test, not a feature decision.

What changed

My first version showed the bet as people picked their answer. In review we saw the problem: two decisions at once, competing for attention. I moved it to the moment the result landed, when interest peaks and nothing else is asking for a decision.

The test

A 14-day A/B test against the existing game. The cross-sell version won: £1.5m in extra revenue and 20% click-through. Engagement and retention held, so the worry about spoiling the game didn’t come true.

What it means for your site

Timing beats placement. The best moment for an upsell is right after someone gets what they came for, not while they’re still deciding. It’s one of the first things I look for in an audit.

How the audit works

Five working days. No fluff.

  1. A quick call

We talk about your site, your numbers and where you think the problem is. If I can’t help, I’ll say so.

    20 minutes, free
  2. Access

Read-only access to your analytics and the pages that matter most. Nothing to install.

    Day 1
  3. The review

I go through the journey as your customers do, check where they drop out, and test my ideas against your data.

    Days 1 to 4
  4. Walkthrough

You get the fixes ranked by impact, a recorded video, and a call to agree what to do first.

Richard Ilott
Who you’ll work with

Me. Not a junior.

I’m Richard. Nine years designing products where small changes move big numbers. No account managers, no handing you off. You talk to the person doing the work.

  • JD Sports · web, app and in-store, over 10 million sessions a month
  • Paddy Power Betfair · regulated sign-up, verification and payments
  • Two FTSE 100 companies and 27 LinkedIn recommendations
  • Before design, years in sales. I know a page has one job: to sell.
Is this for you?

Best for brands with traffic to lose.

A good fit

  • Online shops doing roughly £1m to £20m a year online
  • Brands with steady traffic but a checkout that leaks
  • Teams with developers, but no senior designer looking at conversion

Not the right fit

  • Brand-new sites without much traffic yet
  • A full rebuild or new brand from scratch
  • Quick fixes without data to check them against
In their words

What people I’ve worked with say.

Richard consistently brought a calm, pragmatic approach to challenging situations and maintained a great sense of humour, even under pressure.

Questions

Before you book.

Do you build the changes as well?

No. I design them and hand them over ready for your developers to build, with notes on what each change should do and how to check it worked.

What do you need from me?

Read-only access to your analytics, the pages you want looked at, and 20 minutes for the first call. That’s it.

Which platforms do you work with?

Any. Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or something custom. The problems people hit at checkout look the same whatever the site is built on.

Why not hire an agency?

You can. You’ll often get a senior person in the pitch and a junior on the work. With me, the person on the call is the person doing the audit, at a fixed price.

What if you don’t find much?

Then that’s worth knowing too. If your site isn’t what’s holding sales back, I’ll tell you, and point you at where the problem more likely is.

How soon can you start?

Usually within a week or two. I work with a small number of clients at a time so each gets my full attention, so I’ll give you a firm start date on the call.

How do I pay?

25% up front to book your slot, and the rest when you get the walkthrough. Invoiced in pounds, by bank transfer.
